A good mid-budget movie and a solid modern entry for hard-boiled noir. I really do love Russell Crowe, and aside from his wandering accents, I thought he was great. Particularly effective in the debate scene. The plot is weak, you can’t stare at it too hard, but for the length of the movie I was well-entertained and pleasantly surprised.
This is a movie that Tim and I watched for our spoiler series. Read our spoilery convo after you go see the movie!
Sexy Beast (2000) Jonathan Glazer
After only one viewing (and now, over two months later), I’m not sure what to say about this, except that I loved it. A kissing cousin to one of my favorites, 44-Inch Chest, Sexy Beast is a blistering, stunning thrill. Give me these swings on the gangster genre any day. Give me darkness, or give me bright blues and golds, blood and dirt, sunburns and white leather. Give me Ray Winstone, always, with his voice and his ferocity and his tenderness. Give me Ben Kingsley as a fucking psychopath. Give me stylized, stylish violence, and tense, lyrical sequences. I want it all, and this movie has it.

Fargo (1996) Joel and Ethan Coen
The film - excellent, of course. I don’t know how many times I’ve seen it, and it never gets old.
The audio commentary with DP Roger Deakins - just alright. Deakins tells some interesting stories, explains some of the joys and difficulties of shooting, but towards the end sort of gives up and just watches the movie in silence. I don’t blame him =)
